How do Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) Injections work?
As human beings, our platelet activation plays a vital role in our body’s natural healing process. Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, uses injections of a persons’ own platelets to help accelerate the healing of the patients’ injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and/or joints. In this way, the PRP injections use the body’s natural healing system to improve musculoskeletal problems.
PRP injections can also be used to help attract and send stem cells to a certain part of the body where intense healing is needed. Stem cells can be found all throughout the human body. Their sole purpose is to move constantly throughout the body and find places where an injury has occurred and to regulate and lead the healing process. The body’s healing process includes stimulating new cell and stem cell growth, generating the growth of factor proteins, and becoming the building blocks for tissue repair. When your doctor injects PRP into a damaged area on or in your body, the chemicals that are released from the platelets will act like guides for the stem cells, which are then led to the injured area where the PRP was initially injected.
What conditions can be treated with PRP injections?
The effectiveness that PRP therapy has can vary from person to person. Some factors that can contribute to the effectiveness of PRP treatments can include:
- The area(s) of the body that’s being treated
- Overall health of the patient that’s being treated
- Whether the injury being treated is acute or chronic
Chronic Tendon Injuries
PRP injection therapy has been shown to be the most effective in treating chronic tendon injuries, this is especially true for tennis elbow. Tennis elbow is a very common injury in the tendons on the outside of the elbow. The use of PRP injections for other chronic tendon injuries, such as chronic Achilles tendonitis or inflammation of the patellar tendon on the knee, which is also known as jumper’s knee, are other chronic conditions that prp injections can help treat.
