How do I know that my back and neck pain needs to be seen by a doctor?
If the pain you are feeling in your back and neck is restricting your movement or interfering with your daily activities, it’s a good idea to consult with one of our orthopedic doctors. This is especially true if this pain is lingering and will not go away. Neck pain often resides in the cervical vertebrae in your neck. This area is easily subject to injury given how often it moves and unprotected it is. We define neck and back pain as being acute and chronic. Acute pain is sudden and intense but generally subsides over time. Chronic pain will last for weeks, months, or longer and can be intermittent or continuous.
What is causing my back and neck pain?
The root cause of your pain is something we strive to identify at CurPoint Orthopedic. If we can determine the cause of your back or neck pain, treatment is often very successful. Finding the reason can be very difficult, so we often employ many diagnostic tests to help our doctors figure it out.
We have found that pain is often caused by:
⦁ Trauma (Fractures & injuries)
⦁ Strenuous or repetitive activities
⦁ Bone spurs
⦁ Degeneration of vertebrae
⦁ Sprain or strain of nearby muscles & ligaments
⦁ Herniated disk
⦁ Pinched Nerve
⦁ Poor muscle tone
What are some symptoms of back and neck pain?
⦁ Pain in your back that can be sharp, dull, or burning. This pain can be over a large area or in a single spot.
⦁ Leg numbness or tingling sensation
⦁ Stiffness or achiness along your spine
⦁ Shooting pain from your buttock down to your toes
⦁ Chronic ache after standing or sitting for long periods of time
How do you diagnose back and neck pain at your clinic?
If you are experiencing chronic back and neck pain or if you have a sudden onset of acute pain, you should see our providers today for a physical exam. When you visit our orthopedic clinic, you’ll meet one on one with our providers who will review with you the symptoms of your pain. They will likely ask when the pain is at its worst, what makes it worse, what makes it feel better, where the pain is located, and several other questions. This information will help them pinpoint the problem. You will then receive a physical exam, and some diagnostic testing will take place. This may include guided movements to see when things begin to hurt as well as some diagnostic imaging such as x-rays or an MRI. When finished, our doctor will review all of the results with you and determine the best treatment for you.
